Jackie Brown

By Madeleine

On 4th June 2007 I received an email telling me Jackie succumbed, on the last day of May, to the brain tumor that she had been fighting for some time. Jackie was a major contributer to the Ivy League from the earliest days of the shop in 1982/3. More recently she had relocated to Spain and I personally lost touch with her. When I started this blog I had no idea I would begin with such sad news.I remember Jackie as a bright and cheerful person whose creations always had a lightness and joy about them. I also thank her for introducing me to the music of Gil Scott Heron, which I first heard as the music she had chosen to back the presentation of her first collection.

Jackie’s dress and jacket.

I have searched my archive of photographs and can find only this one relating to Jackie, from a press clipping covering the launch of the new Ivy League shop in 1985. If anyone reading this has any pictures they’d like to share please send them to me and I’ll post them here.

Sandra left this message about Jackie on the previous post. I’ve copied it here in case it gets overlooked there.

    In Memory of Jackie.

The girl who brought a shine to every room
life and soul of forever parties
brave enough to be the first,
to say hello to the Rik Mayall,
    a Young One then
    smiling in appreciation
an ice breaker if ever there was one
happy enough to leap into the
    unknown worlds of Barcelona
    bursting at the seams with
    vibrancy and culture,
    shock it may have been
    but for the shortest while
    as friends and nightlife welcomed
    with open arms
‘The Girl from Ipanima’ who sang
    for fun
    entertaining everyone
    at The Piano Bar
    those divine, exquisite
    outfits fit for a princess
    and the occasional prince.
    A super shouldered black
    fitted jacket worn forever
    and a day
    doesn’t go by
when I see her smiling face and
    think, try to, of words
    to capture her look
    and artfullness
    in the eighties
bright red lipstick and dark eyes
    and huge hair
    and huge hair
    which became the
    richest, darkest, staightest
    and thickest in this world
she has left her greatest gifts
    two lovely girls
    who wouldn’t even know me
    but I knew her
    and she was some woman.

    Gone but not Forgotten…xx
